11/12/2017. Winter Wonderland. Yesterdays snow and the freezing overnight conditions have turned one of Ireland's hidden gems, The Heath, outside Portlaois, into a winter wonderland. A historic common where once chariot races took place and in the last century was a place where horse racing took place. Almost a mini version of the famous Curragh Plains in Kildare, its flat area of over 400 acres, which contain furze bushes and a small bog lake, surrounded by four hills, one of which contains the famous Rock of Dunamase Castle.
