File photo: Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources Pat Rabbitte has confirmed ESB and Vodafone have invested €450 million in building a 100%fibre broadband throughout Ireland. The system will utilise existing electricity networks to deliver super fast broadband speeds to homes and businesses. The aim is to connect rural and isolated areas ofireland: Letterkenny in Co Donegal, Ballina in Co Mayo and Tralee in Co Kerry will be among the first 50 towns to avail of the fibre power. The network will offer speeds up to 1000Mbps. Minister Rabbitte said the State was concerned that commercial industry was not developing in provincial Ireland, broadening the gaps between urban and rural life. The project is subject to European Approval, though, it is believed the service will be readily available from early 2015, RTE reports. END
