BREXIT STORY 6550.jpg
24/3/2017. Brexit Story Ireland. As British Prime Minister Theresa May gets set to trigger Brexit in a few days time, communities on both sides of the border in Ireland, hold their breath waiting to find out the implications of a possible hard border. Compared to 20 years ago the border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, has almost disappeared, except for safety notices to alert motorists that the speed limit in the Republic is in kilometers and in NI, its in miles. The Peace Process has not only changed minds and attitudes, but commerce as well, with business flowing unhindered between the two countries as private cars and goods laden trucks cross the almost invisable borders without checks of any kind. Any change to the current ease of travel, will not only have serious economic consequences, but will turn minds back to the bad old days of not only a divided landscape, but a people as well. Photo shows Seamus McGarvey standing with one foot on each side of the border (indicated by the daffodil and the change in the road surface), outside his home at the Rookery on the south side of the border (nearest camera), outside Derry City.
